Project Description

diaspora* is a federated, decentralized social network.

As opposed to centralized social media platforms diaspora* consists of multiple servers talking to each other. You can host your own server (we call them pods) and follow and share with friends on other pods or join a community pod.

A single server instance is a Rails app, frontend and backend are not separated.

Project's Requirements

For backend tasks knowledge of Ruby and Rails are recommended.

Basic knowledge of Ruby and Rails is also handy for frontend tasks but some JavaScript experience is definitely required.

Don't shy away to use IRC!

Since this is a social media platform creating an account and getting familiar with the usage of the software is also a good place to start :)

Tasks And Features

Main development interaction happens directly on GitHub or, more real time, on the #diaspora-dev IRC channel on freenode.

You can jump right in!

The issue tracker on GitHub has plenty of bug fixes or feature requests for all skill levels. Look for the newcomer label. Don't be afraid to ask for what is needed for a certain issue! The maintainers are friendly and happy to help you!

Some examples (but any ticket would do!):
- Improve the admin panel #6391 or #5060
- Improve the UI #7174 or 6700
- Writing documentation is also very welcome. It lives in the wiki
