  • Day 46 - Second Day of Fullstack Fest

Team ImpactDevs (WorldBrain - Verifying the Internet with Science) [2017] — at September 5, 2017 22:50 UTC

Today we had a lot of interesting speakers, including my personal hero Kelsey Breneman :)
    Some highlights of today:
-IOT & DDoS attacks with John Graham Cunningham: hackers are moving from networks attacks towards HTTP request hacks, by sending millions of requests at a time. Ways to prevent connected home devices include closing all unnecessary ports, installing security patches and updates
-IOT & Climate change: electrical grid depends on having secure and reliable energy generation at same asynchronous frequency (ex 60 hz in US). We can change energy use and behaviour having market for home batteries that can sell energy when there is a demand and supply gap. Connecting IOT to home batteries can help these exchanges in realitime
-Chaos Engineering: Make failure observable by implementing distributed tracing to understand what's happening to the system, and make it resilient by having Chaos Days where you purposely break part of the system and the team determines the cause and finds solution

  • Day 45 - We're at Full Stack Fest!

Team ImpactDevs (WorldBrain - Verifying the Internet with Science) [2017] — at September 4, 2017 22:15 UTC

Had such a great first day of FSF in Barcelona. The speakers were stellar, and half of them were amazing women as well! We went to these talks:
-Terraforms and Delivery Pipelines: how to code your infrastructure for unit testing, production env, function testing, deployment
-Migrating existing systems to serverless: comparing the old way of using third part to worry about servers and hosting, vs new way of functions as a service (SAAS) where event-driven functions automatically scale up and down the containers needed to provice service from servers
-VueJS Workshop: learned about using Vue, and how it's most appropriate to use when your front end components contain a lot of logic
-Deep Learning Model Predictions: how to train models from datasets, assign into containers and deploy
-When Major Systems fail: how to proactively plan for system failures by defining critical metrics, line of communication, personnel beforehand for dealing with outages.

  • Day 40 - Heroku workshop

Team ImpactDevs (WorldBrain - Verifying the Internet with Science) [2017] — at August 29, 2017 07:22 UTC

Today we had a Heroku workshop with Izel. Conclsion: perhaps we shuold build our notifs centre in Rails!

Badge dropdown is working in react, with async functions, though performance issues to work on.

Finally understood why Notifications app is not deploying: I'm trying to deploy the react front end and node server on a single Herroku app, but opening several ports in Heroku is not allowed
What to do next: 2 options
    1) Split app into 2 separate repos: React FE and BE API node using Node/Express server, then deploy both to Heroku
    2) Try serving your react app dist directory from node server using express.static
